Gameplay Guide

This guide will go over all the basic gameplay features of the infamous Bunnyrom that may not have been so well explained by the instructions that come with it. It aims to answer questions you may have such as “How the heck do I use this thing?” or “What is happening?”

Starting Your Pet

When you first start up the device, you'll be greeted with the 168 in 1 title screen, followed by the infamous bunny. On this screen you're meant to use the [Select] button to cycle through the 168 pet options and then press [Decide] to choose the one you want. If you're used to Tamagotchis, you can think of [Select] as the [A] button, [Decide] as the [B] button, and [Cancel] as the [C] button.

After you've chosen a pet, you'll be given the opportunity to pick a name for your pet. Rather than letting you type a name though, it just gives you some options: Ann, Joy, Eve, Jim, May, Sue, Tom, and Bob. You'll then be prompted to set the time in military time, though it doesn't really matter much what you set it to since you'll never see the time again and the pet does not have a bedtime.

Once you've made your selections, your pet will hatch in a rather dramatic explosion and just like a Tamagotchi, will immediately be hungry with the call icon going off. Let's go over the different icons to see how you can care for your new pet.

Status Icon

The first icon, represented by a meter, tells you how your pet is doing. On the first page there are two stats.

The one with the clock is your pet's age or growth. It increases both with time but also playing with your pet and performing certain actions can cause it to increase faster. The second is the hunger meter which can go up to 99 and as you might expect, when it drops to 0, your pet will call for you. If you press [Select] to go through the pages it'll also show you how much gold you have and the name you had picked.

Food Icon

The food icon, represented by a little guy with a chef's hat, is where you feed your pet. You have two choices of food, sushi and cake , reminiscent of the meal and snack options on a Tamagotchi. However, unlike a Tamagotchi, both of these items will raise your pet's hunger and it doesn't seem to make any difference which one you choose.

Toilet Icon

If you're used to tamas, this one's pretty self explanatory. Select this when your pet poops to clear the poop off the screen.

Game Icon

If you select the baseball bat, you'll be given the options of two games and the shop.

The first game is a catch game where the goal is to press [Decide] at the right time to make the dog jump and catch the frisbee. It's actually a lot harder than it seems like it should be. The game ends once you miss a jump three times. If you don't jump, it doesn't count against you.

In the second game, you use [Select] and [Decide] to move your spaceship left and right to avoid the incoming projectiles. These come at different, seemingly random speeds. Sometimes one will come really fast and it's pretty hard to dodge. The game ends when you get hit once.

Both games will earn you gold based on how well you did which you can spend at the shop. There are three items for sale in the shop the purpose of which is to allow you to use the Transform function. It doesn't tell you the prices when you try to buy them but instead you just get the chicken shaking its head if you don't have enough gold to afford the item. This table shows the prices:

500G
600G
700G

“Connect” Icon

I put connect in quotes because these things don't actually connect, but you probably recognize the icon as the connect icon from the Tamagotchi Connection series.

Under this icon are three sub-icons.

The first is a picture of a pet on a computer. The instructions that came with mine describe it as school, but since you get gold for using it I think it's more of a stripped down version of the job function from the connection v4/entama. Your pet will use a computer for a few seconds and then get paid. I have no idea what they're doing on there, maybe filling out surveys.

The second icon to me looks like a sword and shield although the instructions describe it as a “bench” and say to use it if you want to play with friends. At first it doesn't do anything at all, but eventually it will play an animation of two pets playing on a seesaw.

Last will be a yin-yang symbol which is the Transform function. To use this, you have to have one of the items from the shop in your inventory and then you'll be able to make your pet turn into one of the other pets on the device. Which item you have influences the pool of available pets you can get, sorted by the order they're listed in on the selection menu. The bear clip only pulls from the first few pets, the ribbon the middle ones, and the flaming heart ones through the end. I haven't nailed down exactly what the ranges are for each item but the more expensive item, the larger the selection of characters.

Discipline Icon

When you press the discipline icon you get a screen where your pet is getting lectured in front of a blackboard. Supposedly you use it when your pet misbehaves, but I've never seen them actually do that. Maybe my bunny is just particularly well-behaved.

Medicine Icon

As you might've guessed, if you see a skull above your pet's head, then they're sick. Use this icon to heal them.

Mail Icon

Another feature lifted straight from the v4/entama. Sometimes this icon starts blinking when you have mail, which I've noticed only seems to happen when you've been actively using the device, never when it's idle.
There are two icons under the Mail icon

The first is the star/”fortune” icon. When you select it it will show you a single number that changes over time. This is actually a hint to help you figure out the codes for the Key function we'll go over in the next section.

Next is the envelope where you can check your mail if the icon was blinking at you. Your mail will always be one of two things: gold or poop. Instead of making your pet upset like on tamas, it'll just be sitting on the floor like when your pet poops and you'll have to clean it up.

Book Icon

The book icon is another with a few options under it.

The first is the Key which will prompt you to enter a three digit number. This is where those numbers from the fortune come into play. If you enter a valid number, it will give you gold, feed your pet and can even increase their growth meter! The codes seem to be persistent so if you figure one out, you can continue to use it even if you reset. A couple valid ones if you want to try them out are 804 and 444. They all seem to be multiples of 12, specifically the kind where if you add up the three digits it equals 12 (i.e. 4+4+4=12).

Next is the treasure chest which is where you can view the items you've bought from the shop. It seems to only hold one item at a time so if you buy another one it will overwrite the one you have in there.

Call Icon

This icon can't be selected but lights up when your pet needs something.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I left my bunnyrom alone and now the screen is blank. Is this normal?
The device goes into a battery-saving sleep mode when you don't mess with it for a few minutes. Press the [Cancel] button to wake it back up.
  • Can you pause or turn off the bunnyrom?
There's not a pause feature, but while it's in sleep mode the stats don't really change very much. The pets also never seem to die anyway so you're fine to leave it alone.
  • How do I mute the sound?
Unfortunately, there is no way to mute the sound. I actually opened mine up and ripped off one of the speaker wires to semi-permanently mute mine.
  • My pet is frozen on the screen and none of the buttons work!

This is, in my opinion, the most annoying thing about the Bunnyroms. They have a tendency to randomly crash and freeze up, giving you no choice but to press the reset button and start over. Maybe that's why the reset button is so easily accessible.
